SAS Visual Analytics Provides Wow Factor
Getting my Friday off to a great start, I just watched a demonstration of a new analytics tool that powered through 1.1 billion rows of data in a flash, delivering results in data visualizations that can run on the user platform of your choice, including the iPad. To quote a tweet from Fern Halper, a partner at Hurwitz & Associates who had seen the demo, “analyzing 1.15B rows of data, in like a second. Very impressive.”

GUI Schmooey ‒ You Need to Know Code!
As those of you my age and older may recall, as recently as 20 or 25 years ago you pretty much had to know a great deal about how your computer worked in order to use it effectively (unless you had an Apple Mac). Today, with the dominance of “easy” point-and-click graphical user interfaces (GUI), good luck troubleshooting that error message without programming skills.

Get Certified No Vendor Attached
Certifications are part and parcel of the business world, whether you’re an accountant, a civil engineer, an information security officer, or, yes, an analyst. Good certification programs are rigorous, making candidates earn the official stamps of approval about their expertise in a particular subject area.

Expert Envisions 360-Degree View of Web Analytics
Ask Web analytics professionals, and they ll tell you about the benefits of a 360-degree view of your Website visitors and social media followers. Unfortunately, enterprises still often place these activities in silos overseen by disparate internal or even external groups that rarely collaborate.

Brushing Your Teeth With Analytics
As more evidence of the growing personal analytics trend we’ve written about previously, analytics meets dental hygiene with a smart toothbrush designed to measure how well you clean your teeth. A sensor on the brush, which includes a Bluetooth radio, transmits the data to an Android smartphone application — a point sure to generate many a pun, as Mashable’s Adam Falk observes:

Where Big Data, the Cloud, & Corn Collide
When two Google leaders decided that they wanted to help humanity, little did they realize they would soon find themselves immersed in a world of soybeans and soil conditions. But that is precisely where David Friedberg, a founding member of Google’s corporate development team, and Siraj Khaliq, a technical lead, have landed.

Fueling Data Revolution Requires Sparks From Top
Count me among the most enthused about all the attention that everything data, from big data to analytics to quality to culture, is getting these days. Though the attention has grown steadily for some time, the subject is enjoying a distinct and welcome uptick. Data is all the rage — and not just in the technology community, as evidenced in recent New York Times features on the promise and the perils of big data.

Can You Draw This Dog?

If you ask any four-year-old (and I know this for a fact since I once taught preschool) if they can draw, sing, or dance, they will look at you as if you have lost your mind. Of course they can draw/sing/dance! Who can t?! It takes considerable institutional effort and several years of education, art appreciation, and art criticism to teach us that we were evidently wrong about this.

Collect Data With a Purpose
Last week, I blogged about filling out an electronic survey in order to get Internet access at the San Francisco International Airport. One AllAnalytics.com community member asked why I hadnt just watched a sponsor video, another option offered for Internet access, since it would have taken less time than the survey.

Scale Up With HPC for Best Analytics Support
More, more, more: Firms are expanding their analytics functions, collecting additional information, and therefore needing more processing power. Scaling up their datacenter infrastructures via high-performance computing (HPC) offers businesses several benefits. Here I’m going to look at how HPC compares specifically to the much-talked-about “scale-out” option offered by cloud and hosting providers.

Sometimes You Can Learn From a Distraction
If you Google “writing or constructing and multiple choice,” you’ll find somewhat more than 10,000 different articles about multiple choice exams and surveys in English on the Web. Nearly all of the advice will be about the question (short, clear, unambiguous) and the right answers (clearly right, without complicated conjunction structures, phrased positively). The distractors — those wrong choices that make up the majority of the answers — are supposed to be “plausible,” meaning only that they should look like right answers to students who don’t know anything.

Big Box Uses Twitter Data for Crisis Management
One hundred and forty characters seems like a small amount of data, but its enough information to save or sabotage a brand, depending on how its managed. That’s why one big-box store has begun mining Twitter, project team members said at Predictive Analytics World this week in San Francisco.

Narrowing the Business-IT Gap
As most of you know by now, I tend to come at the business intelligence discussion from the technology angle. Having been in the IT industry for nearly two decades now (wow, cant believe its been that long), Im still stunned when I spy disconnects between business goals and infrastructure capabilities. BI is often the victim of such a chasm.
